CORNER STONE OF A NEW CHURCH IN BOSTON.Extract from the Boston Recorder, June 26, 1819.
".....On Wednesday last, the Corner Stone of the house of worship for Rev. Mr. Sabine's Church and Society, was laid in Essex-Street, in a very eligible and important section of the town. The ceremony was performed in the following order.
Rev. Mr. Codman introduced the service by observing that the want of more places of public worship had long been lamented. It was a matter of great delight that that evil would now be in a measure remedied, especially in the south part of the town. He trusted, under present prospects, that the erection of this new church would prove a great blessing to thousands of souls now destitute of the means of grace, and to thousands more yet unborn. He concluded by reading the following declaration, shewing,
“ That a Congregational Church, upon the New-England Platform, was gathered in Boylston Hall, on the 27th January last, and that Rev. James Sabine was installed as their Pastor at the same time. That this church and society having worshipped in the said Hall from that period to the present, have been encouraged from the success attending their public ministrations, to attempt the erection of a house of worship, and that the present assembly is called together to witness the laying the corner stone of that sacred edifice. ”
The Rev. Mr. Huntington made the Prayer. The Stone was laid by the Pastor,* who delivered the following ADDRESS.
* A silver Plate was inserted in the Stone, with this inscription:—“ Built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, JESUS CHRIST himself being the chief Corner Stone.”— A piece of United States Coin accompanied the Plate.
