    Description

Unusual hand loomed beaded sash or belt, made in New Mexico.
I found this lovely beaded sash at an estate sale near Ruidoso, New Mexico about 8 or 10 years ago. I had planned on making a jacket and hand stitching the beadwork up the front, behind the neck and down the other side of the front. A project that did not happen, and at this late date, won't. It is hand loomed, measuring 75" from tip of fringe on one end to tip of fringe on the other (the fringe is about 4 1/2" on each end), and is about 1 5/8" wide. I believe this kind of sash should be backed with a very thin piece of leather or ribbon to reinforce the beadwork. I have looked at pictures of beadwork sashes, mostly vintage or antique, and they all seem to have the thin leather backing, at least on the part that would go around the waist, some with leather ties or hooks to hold the belt in place and allow the excess to hang free. Or of course you could use it for display or hand stitch it to a piece clothing like a jacket or coat. The colors are a blood red, leaf green, navy blue, light blue, on a white background. I took the photos with and without flash, and I think the flash shots show the whiteness of the beads the best.
